My husband and I are approximately 3 - 5 years away from retirement. Originally we were considering Asheville NC but I'm afraid that it might be too pricey already, much less in 5 more years so I'm looking at alternative locations.

Although we are a gay couple, we don't necessarily need a adj active gay community, just a community where we can make friendships, both gay and straight, and feel welcomed.

Additional considerations are that although I'm originally from Atlanta, my husband is from the Philadelphia area where we currently live. Although my husband isn't opposed to my desire to repay to the South for retirement, he doesn't fully appreciate or understand the way that Southerners sometimes hold onto to the Civil War. So that being said, we are seeking an area where the Civil War isn't a focus of the community. This is partially why Lexington didn't create the short list.

Things we are looking for include:

Social club provides a safe space for the gay community

CHARLOTTESVILLE - It's just about dusk on a Friday bedtime in Charlottesville. Across the street from Bodo's Bagel and adjacent to the Cavalier Diner is a night club. 

You can't tell from the outside, though. There are some Pride flags waving out front, but there's just a door by an Asian market and a Mexican grocery on Emmet Street.

You penetrate a hallway on the first floor. The walls are dark, there are various lights strobing about as you head up a staircase giving off hues of purple, pink and blue.

There's a faint sound of music playing — various artists from Britney Spears and Whitney Houston to Gloria Gaynor and Spice Girls. 

This is Impulse Gay Social Club.
