At the base of the Hollywood Hills, the city of West Hollywood is the center of LGBTQ+ Los Angeles. In , West Hollywood became the first majority-gay municipality in the country, and ever since, its prosperous tradition of pride and acceptance has been enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
marks the 40th anniversary of this milestone, and West Hollywood will commemorate that and the many progressive LGBTQ+ policies that followed it with 40 Days of Pride and the return of the recently reinvigorated WeHo Pride event. With the theme of “Pride Starts Here,” everything kicks off on Harvey Milk Day (May 22) and runs through June 30 with programming that includes the WeHo Pride Weekend Parade, the Dyke March, the WeHo Pride Arts Festival and more.

One Institute is a leading producer of intersectional LGBTQ+ history, arts, and cultural content in Los Angeles. In , One Institute launched Circa, the first and only queer histories festival in the country, in honor of LGBTQ+ History Month. This month-long, LA County-wide programming series showcases the trailblazing histories and vibrant cultural contributions of LGBTQ+ communities through exhibitions, performance, readings, screenings, lectures, dialogues, and parties.
In addition to Circa, One Institute has organized dozens of high-quality, no price multimedia projects and exhibitions, including the multi-site public art project Pride Publics, which attracted over 70, visitors and uplifted the serve of over 90 LGBTQ+ artists, scholars, and community leaders. Our podcast Periodically Queer returned for a second season in June and was featured in the Los Angeles Times.
Through our education programs, One Institute has served hundreds of educators and schools, providing LGBTQ+ history lesson plans to K teachers across Los Angeles and beyond. Our youth mentor
Nestled between Beverly Hills and Hollywood and covering an area of only about two square miles, West Hollywood is home to more than 34 thousand people.
More than a third of the population identifies as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender and coming up this weekend, as it has done for 47 years, WeHo will host the Pride Parade and Festival.
The little city has played an oversized role in history in the gay community. Karen Tongson knows a lot about that rich heritage. She teaches gender studies at USC, and when she stopped by Take Two, she told A Martinez all about the early history of West Hollywood, what sets it apart from other L.A. cities when it comes to LGBT history and more.
